Senior dog care: daily checks, home changes and vet visits

An older dog needs care that fits their mobility, health and everyday habits. Slower rising, pacing at night or a change in appetite deserve a conversation with your vet. Avoid assuming that every new difficulty is simply part of ageing. This practical plan helps you gather useful information and make daily routines easier.

When is a dog a senior?

There is no single birthday that applies to every dog. AAHA defines the senior stage as the final quarter of estimated lifespan, so factors such as size and breed matter. Ask your vet when to expand preventive care for your dog. Reaching a particular age alone does not determine a diet or treatment.

What should you watch during an ordinary day?

Compare your dog with their own previous behaviour. Make a short note with the date, situation and frequency of each change:

For example: “Since 12 October, she rises more slowly after a nap. It happened four times this week.” A short video of natural movement can be more useful than “she walks badly”. AAHA recommends home videos when assessing movement and pain. Avoid prompting jumps or painful movements for the camera.

Sleep or orientation changes alone cannot establish a diagnosis of canine cognitive dysfunction. AAHA describes the need to investigate other possible causes of similar behaviour. Report the change before choosing a supplement yourself.

Make the home and walks easier

Check the route from the bed to water and the outside door. Secure sliding rugs, provide firm footing and remove obstacles. With reduced vision or hearing, review access to stairs and other hazards. Record which route your dog manages comfortably and when they begin slowing down. This gives the vet something specific to work with when discussing exercise. A fixed distance for every older dog is less useful. Do not give your own pain medicines.

Prepare for the health review

• Which changes need further investigation?
• What activity and home adaptations suit my dog's current abilities?
• When is the next review, and what should prompt an earlier call?
• Should I bring a sample or follow any preparation instructions for testing?

Review feeding and keep the agreed plan

Do not switch food just because a bag says “senior”. AAHA recommends assessing body and muscle condition, since weight alone cannot describe nutritional status. Gather meal and treat details using the dog nutrition guide. Dated measurements can also help with tracking changes in your dog's weight.

Digital pet health records let you keep visits, medicines and weight measurements together. After the appointment, record the agreed review date and allocate care tasks with your household. Contact the practice earlier about sudden or concerning changes, instead of waiting for the routine appointment. A recorded history supports that conversation; it does not assess symptoms.
