Before booking a trip with your dog, write down the departure country, every border crossing, your country of residence and the return route. These details determine which rules to check. “Travelling to the UK” is too broad: Great Britain means England, Scotland and Wales, while Northern Ireland has separate arrangements.
This checklist covers preparation for a private trip with your own dog. Sale, rehoming and some journeys without the owner follow different rules. Check official guidance for your exact circumstances before paying for transport.
Match the documents to your route

Use Your Europe for EU travel documents, GOV.UK for entering Great Britain, GB residents travelling to the EU and travel to Northern Ireland. A passport's issuing country alone does not settle every route.
For travel outside these routes, consult the destination's official veterinary authority. Check the return requirements before leaving, because additional tests or documents may need advance preparation.
Check identification and rabies dates with your vet
For EU travel, the microchip must precede the rabies vaccination used for travel. The initial vaccination normally requires a wait of at least 21 days. A booster given after the previous vaccination expires can restart that waiting period. Confirm the earliest permitted travel date with your vet using the official rabies rules.
If you need an AHC for departure from Great Britain, arrange the appointment in advance: it must be issued within the required window for entry into the EU, currently 10 days. Do not assume the appointment can be booked at the last minute. General dog vaccination planning is separate from checking legal travel validity.
Book any required tapeworm treatment around arrival
For entry into Great Britain, a vet usually needs to administer and record tapeworm treatment 24 to 120 hours before arrival. Direct arrivals from Finland, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Malta and Norway are exempt. See GOV.UK's treatment and timing rules.
Calculate from the planned arrival time, including the return journey. Ask the vet to complete the required date, time, product details, stamp and signature. If transport is delayed beyond the window, check the rules again. Other destinations can also require treatment; Northern Ireland is not a blanket exemption for dogs arriving from the EU.
Prepare one folder before departure
Keep the required original passport or certificate accessible, together with any declarations or test results required for your route. Great Britain requires originals, not photocopies. Check the dog's identification and the vet-completed sections before leaving the practice.
Also confirm the carrier's pet booking, check-in arrangements and transport requirements. Pack current medicine instructions, sufficient prescribed supplies arranged with your vet, and practice contact details.
